Unit 1 · Getting the Image Running · Lesson 2 of 25

Install VirtualBox and Import the Image

Step by step: get the software, get the image, and get it running safely.

Getting the machine onto your computer

Two downloads and about ten minutes, most of it waiting. Work through the steps in order and you will be logged in and ready to go.

Step 1: install VirtualBox

VirtualBox is free software that runs another computer inside a window on yours.

  1. Go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
  2. Under VirtualBox platform packages, click the link for your system: Windows hosts, macOS / Intel hosts, or Apple Silicon hosts.
  3. Run the installer and accept every default. It will warn you that your network connection will briefly reset. That is normal.
  4. Open VirtualBox when it finishes. You should see an empty list of machines.

Step 2: download the right image for your computer

There are two builds. Which one you need depends on the chip in your computer, not on Windows versus Mac.

Your computerChipWhich download
Any Windows PCIntel or AMDthe .ova linked below
Intel Mac, 2020 or olderIntelthe .ova linked below
Mac with M1, M2, M3 or M4Apple Siliconthe ARM bundle, link below

Not sure about your Mac? Apple menu, then About This Mac, and read the Chip line. If it says Apple M-anything, you need the ARM build.

💡 Why two? A virtual machine runs real instructions on your real processor. Intel and Apple Silicon speak different instruction sets, so an Intel machine cannot start on an M-series Mac. VirtualBox refuses with platform architecture x86 is not supported on ARM. No setting fixes that, you need the other build.

Standard image: the .ova at the bottom of this lesson. It is one large file, so expect it to take a while. Save it somewhere you can find again.

ARM build, Apple Silicon Macs only: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gxbqEZx5F2p-KsHXjRil57I3eoMCTkkE/view?usp=sharing

That one is not a ready-made machine. It is a small bundle of scripts that builds the same challenge on your Mac: same 100 points, same scoring engine. Budget about an hour, though most of it runs on its own. Open READ_ME_MAC.txt inside the download, follow it, then come back to Step 4 of this lesson.

💡 The username is not optional. The ARM build asks you to install Ubuntu yourself. The account has to be yaga with the password Ma5kedPr1ncipal!, because the scoring engine is configured around that account.

Step 3: import it

In VirtualBox:

File → Import Appliance...
→ click the folder icon, choose JJK-TokyoJujutsuHigh.ova
      → Next
      → Finish

It copies a disk, so give it two or three minutes. When it finishes, the machine appears in the list on the left.

Step 4: start it and log in

Double-click the machine to start it. When it boots:

username: yaga
password: Ma5kedPr1ncipal!

That account is yours. The ReadMe will tell you it has to stay an Administrator, and it means it.

Try it yourself

Open a terminal on the machine with Ctrl+Alt+T and check you are in:

whoami # should print: yaga
