CyberPatriot Linux: Tokyo Jujutsu High

Harden a real, deliberately insecure Ubuntu machine on your own computer. A live scoring engine grades every change you make, and each unit teaches you how to find a class of problem rather than handing you a list.

What you’ll learn

This course is 8 units and 25 lessons long. Every lesson is hands-on, and there is nothing to pay.

Unit 1 · Getting the Image Running

What you need before you start, how to get the practice machine running, and how to read your score.

Unit 2 · The ReadMe Is the Rulebook

The most important file on the machine. It decides what counts as a problem, and a lot of your points come from simply doing what it says.

Unit 3 · Forensics First

Three questions, fifteen points, and all of them ask about evidence your own cleanup is about to destroy.

Unit 4 · Auditing Accounts

Removing accounts that should not be there, finding the ones the settings panel hides, and controlling who can use sudo.

Unit 5 · Passwords and Policy

Accounts with no password, the root account, and the two files that set the password rules for everyone.

Unit 6 · Services, Ports, and Software

What this machine offers to the network, what starts on its own, and what is installed that should not be.

Unit 7 · Files, Permissions, and Scheduled Jobs

Where something arranges to run again after a restart, which file permissions are worth points, and the one permission bit that hands out root.

Unit 8 · System Settings and the Final Run

Two system settings worth points, fixes that quietly undo themselves at the next restart, and how to finish a round properly.

Course outline

Built around the Tokyo Jujutsu High practice image: Ubuntu 22.04, scored live out of 100. Unit 1 Getting the Image Running Unit 2 The ReadMe Is the Rulebook Unit 3 Forensics First Unit 4 Auditing Accounts Unit 5 Passwords and Policy Unit 6 Services, Ports, and Software Unit 7 Files, Permissions, and Scheduled Jobs Unit 8 System Settings and the Final Run You will need a computer that can run VirtualBox, about 15 GB of free disk, and 4 GB of memory to spare. Prerequisite: Intro to Linux. This course teaches no general command usage, it assumes it. The exception is timing: if competition is days away, start here anyway and look things up as you go. Already know how CyberPatriot works? Unit 1 is setup and scoring only. Install VirtualBox, import the image, then jump to Unit 2, or straight to Unit 3 if you have run practice images before.
