Unit 1 · What is Linux? · Lesson 1 of 34
Linux? Never heard of it.
Linux: The OS Behind Everything
Linux is the core operating system running quietly in the background of everybody's life.
- Used by NASA
- Every Android phone runs on Linux, and there are over 3 billion of those out there.
- Powers 100% of the top 500 supercomputers in the world
Open Source Origins
Linux was created by Linus Torvalds in 1991 as an open-source operating system. Because it's open-source, people all over the world have contributed to and improved it with their own styles and ideas.
Why We Use It
We use Linux for its cybersecurity capabilities. It comes with a huge ecosystem of built-in and community-made tools that cybersecurity professionals rely on for tasks across every corner of the field.
